Use of a garage

Many laypeople believe that they can use their own garage however they see fit. In fact, however, most German states have garage regulations that often regulate both construction and use in detail. Items that are directly related to the car (tires, roof racks, etc.) are practically always unproblematic and can be stored there – for many other items, however, the situation is not so clear and regulations vary from state to state. For example, storing fuel in the garage is very often not permitted. And using a garage permanently as a workshop or storage room is usually not allowed either. In case of doubt, it is therefore advisable to consult the applicable garage regulations and any additional requirements or regulations imposed by the local authority!
